Kevin Jones

Both my brothers and dad work for power companies. And all three of them are highly favored amongst the companies they work for. My brother, Kevin, works for Entergy in New Orleans. This is a letter about him that was sent to his boss after Hurricane Isaac.

Dear Mr. Lawler,
During the chaos of Hurricane Isaac, one man stood out amongst all others who were called to duty during the aftermath of the storm. For five days, my family was without power. We ran out of food. The mold from the water that made it into the house forced us to sleep outside each night. Each day an Entergy team would toy with our transformer, then leave us hungry, hot, and in the pitch dark. They wore sunglasses and pretended the citizens that were crying for help around them were invisible. Then came day five. My neighborhood was busting at the seams with frustration, broken spirits, and lack of morale. Those who had the resources, had already fled the area. I could not leave. In bustling Uptown New Orleans, I do not have a car. Plus, I care for the sick and elderly 87 year old lady next door.

On day five at 7:30 in the morning an Entergy truck pulled up across the street. I explained to the gentleman that the night before a team had fixed our transformer and said it would "light up" in a few hours. This gentleman, without sunglasses, listened to my story, looked into my eyes from across the street, and with a confidence that gave me my first scrap of hope since the storm, he shouted, "That should have been done. I can't fix your problem now because I am working on this pole. However, YOU WILL HAVE POWER BY THE END OF THE DAY!" With two outstretched arms pointed towards me he said, "YOU CAN TELL ANYONE KEVIN JONES SAID SO!" I immediately reported back to my 87 year old neighbor the good news. We didn't really think we would ever see Kevin Jones again.

At around dusk, my elderly neighbor began fading in and out in the heat. She would pray, begin fainting, sing a spiritual hymnal then hunch forward some more. In the midst of what was the last day of doomsday, I heard gravel popping from a car tire. It was Kevin Jones from Entergy. After checking in on us as human beings, he immediately called out the crews and got the orders to get power up and running. He did more in 15 minutes by combining his personal conviction with his maps, cell phones, and radio than anyone else did all week. He was confident, competent, in control, and possessed an aggressive demeanor about the disaster. He was calling shots, making demands on the radio, and troubleshooting during the last minutes as the sun was setting by jumping in his own vehicle without a crew to find the problems down the road. Kevin Jones returned to the site of my home as the last slice of sun went under. The lights came on and the whole block began crying, dancing in the streets, and thanking Jesus. Of course, Kevin Jones didn't just light up my block. He lit up the rest of Annunciation Street and who knows how many thousands of houses.

Obviously, this stranger who saved the day has a skill-set beyond what I had seen all week. However, it was his determination to help people that mattered. You must understand. We had not seen a police car, fire truck, a National Guard unit, or Red Cross helper--no one, but suffering neighbors. Entergy was the only sign of hope in a broken infrastructure where there is no distribution of physical or emotional help (no food, no one checking in, no one saying "things will be okay"). It is important that every Entergy worker realize that they represent the government, the volunteers, and the hope of a city when they roll during a disaster.

Kevin Jones was compassionate when my 87 year old neighbor cried to him and said that her blood pressure medicine hadn't been refrigerated in days. He offered more than electricity. He offered hope. I don't know Kevin Jones, but I will never forget his name and how he sat on my stoop with my neighbors and listened to them cry, vent, and talk. He answered their questions, treated us like human beings and saved us in a horrible disaster. He made it happen. I hope Kevin Jones is recognized for his valor during the disaster caused by Hurricane Isaac. Thank you for taking the time to listen to my story.

Hurricane Isaac

We made it through hurricane Isaac okay. He overstayed his welcome moving only 5 mph.
Tuesday night we stayed at my parents house.  Around 2:30 or so the power only went out for about an hour.  YAY!!! South MS did get some damage from tornadoes, wind and flooding.

Dan was teaching Konner how to make a bracelet, Wednesday.

Wednesday night was the worst. This is the weather that came through.

We were so happy to get outside and play when the rain stopped.

Our attemp at a family photo on the fourwheeler.

This puddle was right in front of our house.

It always floods here when we have heavy rain.

Dan pulled Rivers and Konner through the water puddle and Konner said it was fun.

Konner put Dan's rainboots on and had a blast splashing in the water.

This is the biggest tree limb that fell out of about 5. The rest are just sticks. We have alot of leaves and pinecones to pick up.

During the storm, I kept a boy from California updated on the weather. We pigged out on all the food in the house. Konner and Rivers ate popcorn two or three times a day. I finished reading a book and started another. We are very blessed to have no damage. There are many people who have had flooding and tornados go through their homes. Please pray for these families as they begin to pick up the pieces and rebuild.

Rainy Day Science Experiments

For the past few days it has rained, rained, rained. I had plans to go to the beach and the rain would not let us. And the rest of this week is suppose to rain every day too. The boys and I went to get in the pool this morning while the sun was out and our pool was green!! EWWW!! We tested it and even though it is a salt water system it needs chlorine. Dan will add some when he gets home from work and hopefully it will be back to normal.

So.. to fight the boredom that my 6 year old has, I got on Pinterest and found a few science experiments to do.

Walking Water

Use too cups and put some water and a few drops of food coloring in one and place a paper towel like so and

eventually the water will ''walk'' to the other cup and fill it up.

Baking Soda & Vinegar

We got a 9x13 baking dish and put 3 cups in it and put some baking soda and more food coloring in each cup.

I let Konner pour the vinegar in and watch it ''explode.''

We also did Tornado in a Jar experiment too.

Then he took a nap!! Look how sweet my lil' big man is!!

Not sure what we will do tomorrow since we did this today? Hmmm..
Any ideas?

Our new friend!!

Apparently Gustav left us a friend. The weekend after Gustav we were out in the yard picking up limbs and mowing. I was push mowing under a tree and out of the corner of my eye I see this HUGE spider. His web was attached to the tree and the ground. Konner was right behind me with his push mower and I didn't want him to run into a piece of his web and have the spider flip out because someone was messing up his lovely abode. I told Dan to come over and see thinking that he would kill it but he didn't. He just resumed mowing the rest for me. Those three black spots above him is his food.

Gustav

During Gustav we stayed at my parents house. Monday morning came rain and winds. Luckily for us we only had tropical storm weather. Here and there we had good gusts of winds. We did get a chance to go out a few times. Konner played in the water puddles until it started raining again then he would run inside.

We took naps. While I was sleeping Konner sat all the dolls/stuffed animals by me.

Dan offered to paint my toenails and I wasn't going to pass that up. Well Mr. Konner wanted his done too. So he picked his color and while Dan painted mine I painted Konner's. Aren't they purty?!?!

It's Hurricane Season!!

There is a possibility that Gustav will hit us. Gustav may result in our power going out. I just wanted to let y'all know that the power companies do the best they can to get everyone's power back on in a safe and timely manner. These men and women work 24/7 until the job is done. They barely have enough time to go home, eat and get any sleep before they have to be back working. Please be patient and respect these people who are working their hardest to get our power back on. My Dad and brothers work for power companies. After Katrina my Dad had a gun pulled on him because the power was not on. My Dad told the guy to do him a favor and shoot because he hadn't slept in days. Same goes for my brothers. Just remember we are all in the same situation. Let's help each other out. Bring the workers a cold glass of sweet tea :) and tell them how much you appreciate how hard they are working. And also, remember these men and women are away from their families and homes, that might possibly could have been damaged. It still scares me to this day when I know my Dad and brothers our out in the lightning, trees falling, rain, trying to get our lights back on. I always say a prayer when I hear my Dad leave and know he will be in dangerous weather. But they love their jobs!! And I'm not just talking about 'power companies'. I'm talking about cops, FEMA, Red Cross, Coast Guard, etc. They are all trying to help YOU!!! Please be safe!!

Konner's first Tropical Storm (Fay)

I think by the time Tropical 'Storm' Fay got to us it was more like Tropical 'Depression' Fay. The Cheramies' did not let Fay get us depressed. No Way!! We went to our friend Natalie's 2nd birthday party. She had a blow up water slide and a blow up Spider Man jumpie thing. Even though the wind was kickin' we still had fun.

When Dan picked Konner to up to slide, he changed his mind and got back down.

But once he slid the first time, that was all it took.

Here is Konner and Dan in the jumpy thing.

Our Little Helper

Konner is in the phase (well we hope it's not a phase) where he wants to help do everything (load/unload dishwasher, do laundry, cook, etc). Tropical Depression Fay kept us inside so he got to help alot. We did laundry, picked up toys and he even helped make a pizza. And he snuck in a few pepperoni.

Lazy, rainy, but otherwise successful day!

As some of you may know Tropical Storm Fay was not as bad as we thought. She still brought some rain our way though. So while we were stuck in all day we buckled down on potty training our little one. It went WONDERFUL!! He did not have the first accident. I am very surprised he didn't ask for a 'present' every time like he has done in the past. We are very proud of him and his 'accomplishments' today. BUT, tomorrow is another day. Wish us luck!!
